Ripper Street/Back to Leman Street
Leaving the London had not been easy. Despite everything, Treves still wanted to keep him on his staff. Infatuation was the most likely explanation, though Matthew at least liked to pretend that his incredible skills as a doctor had something to do with it.
The work he had done at the London was what he'd dreamt of throughout his years of training. Giving all that up, turning down the second chance offered to him after everything he'd done helping Bennet, was one of the hardest things he'd ever had to do. But, at the end of the day, Bennet was his priority. His lover might smile and pretend as though he was feeling fine, recovered from the visions that had struck him down, but Matthew knew how to read a man. He could see the unease, and the tiredness, and he couldn't send him back to work with Reid knowing that he would not be able to keep at least one eye on him at all times.
So he took Reid's offer, too. It meant he was back to cold cadavers, rather than living, breathing patients, but it also meant he was back with Benny at work and at home. The reassurance of that was worth the demotion, in money and career.
"You sure you're ready?" he's fussing, the morning of their first day back. "You can take more time off, if you need it. Inspector said so."
