The best Uncles in Whitechapel
Matthew often can't quite believe that it's been four years since he signed the papers that made his divorce from Susan official. Four years since he's sat in his dining room with Bennet, Reid and his estranged wife and heard that they were engaged and expecting. Sometimes it felt like that had been ten years since, or more, with all that had happened in the interim. Other times, it seemed as though it were only yesterday.
Matthew has a lot more grey in his hair now, and a lot more in the way of whiskers. Time and two bad breaks have left him in need of a cane more often than not, but Bennet assures him it makes him look refined, rather than elderly. He still offers his time to Leman Street, and his Inspector Drake, whenever they have need of him, but he has his own pride and joy in his little surgery set up a stone's throw from his home. He treats anyone who comes to him, charging those who can afford it and offering charity to those who cannot. He has a reputation for his discretion, and so attracts those who fear the consequences of visits to other medical establishments.
This afternoon sees him doctoring, though he intends to close up shop as soon as everything is tidied away. Because, at home with Mrs Ramsay and his love, there are two visitors who he loves dearly and he cannot wait to see them once more.
